Digital Transcription of Historical Artefacts

The Smithsonian Institution is the world’s largest museum, education, and research complex. They house over 155 million museum objects and specimens. Being so large, they rely strongly on help from volunteers. One of the tasks that you can get involved with, from anywhere in the world, is transcribing historical documents and artefacts. From Chinese bank notes that date back to the Ming Dynasty, to handwritten training notes from the first American woman in space; there is an extraordinary selection to choose from.  You do not need any prior experience or skills, the site includes various instruction sheets, guides, tips and an online community where you can ask for advice; just click on the “Learn How to Transcribe” subheading on the landing page.
